Storyline:
It's early autumn of 1975 in Brooklyn and 18-year-old Brian Leary (Nick Thurston) is killing time, pulling off petty crimes with his street tough older brother Danny (Geoff Wigdor), whom he both idolizes and fears. He doesn't really want to be a criminal, but he doesn't share the dreams of his old friends from their working class neighborhood either. They all yearn for the culturally approved 9-to-5 Civil Service jobs with benefit packages that will carry them through weekends of beer into lazy retirement. Brian doesn't want to end up in a soul-numbing job like his buddies, but he's sure he doesn't want to be like his best friend Todd (Zachary Booth) either. Todd has betrayed their blue-collar roots by accepting a scholarship to college. But Brian has a secret -- he's a talented artist. In the basement of the bagel shop beneath his parent's apartment...

Was sort of dragged by a friend, had heard nothing about this tiny movie. Let me tell you, I was blown away. So moved. Stephen Lang (the Colonel from Avatar!) is freakin' scary as the Dad, but there is a moment in the film where - no spoilers - he will knock you out of your seat. Karen Allen doesn't even look like Karen Allen - she is so transformed into this tired, washed out beaten down Brooklyn housewife, but she, too has a moment in the film where you are just sobbing and clapping for her all at the same time. Nick Thurston is a discovery and should be the next Ed Norton or Ryan Gosling. The audience was with the movie all the way. Everyone gasped at the ending - no spoilers - the end is a surprise and a shock to the system. An emotional experience, but somehow you leave feeling so good. It's more than Irish and drinking. Highly recommended.

A refreshing independent film that is part coming-of-age tale with rare authenticity to its setting in Brooklyn 1975 and the other part, a gritty and honest story that does not turn its head from the things in life which make us human. Beautifully written with a surprising performance from newcomer Nick Thurston who is supported by veterans Stephen Lang and Karen Allen. Lang delivers a memorable performance as an alcohol-abusive father who can with the glance of his eye, strike fear in his family's hearts while also struggling to hold back the immense amount of pain that he carries with him each day. I would not be surprised if Lang's performance receives award recognition. I truly enjoyed this film and was captivated by its tasteful use of cinematography. I would highly recommend going to see White Irish Drinkers!

I dont know why critics are giving this such a low rating... they are crazy... look at all the other fan reviews and you will see that this movie is amazing! It is such a compelling storyline that has a great script, fabulous director, and a cast that is to die for. It is a movie that I would see multiple times in the theater and a movie that i would go buy right away. Nick Thurston is a real beauty and is going to be a future star. It is one of those movies that reminds you of a phoenix... watching this man down and at about rock bottom, then to work his way up, while along the way there is laughter, romance, drama, and sorrow. As i said, this movie is an instant classic.

I loved this film...beautifully shot, with strong performances (especially Stephen Lang, powerful and frightening, and Karen Allen, subtle and moving). Great at evoking not just a specific time and place, but a more universal theme of loving those we cannot save, and taking risks to achieve your dreams. Both poignant and funny. A very tender yet exciting film. Definitely worth seeing (though bring your Kleenex!!!).

It's tough for me to confess that I liked the film so much because to be honest I hadn't heard of it till I arrived to the theatre. I pride myself in coming into films with at least SOME background knowledge, but this was a blind run. And boy, was it worth it. This Nick Thurston REALLY blew me away and I just adored the cinematography. There's not much else to say. It's just a really really great film that will surprise you with itself. I'm 20 and loved it, but anybody in high school/college or adulthood will appreciate the genuineness of the characters, plus it has some really great laughs. Check it out!
